3 Tips for Developing Powerful PowerPoint Presentations

A PowerPoint presentation is a great visual tool that can help you win your audience and get results. PowerPoint presentations that are strategically designed and appropriately executed will convey your intended message without any confusion. In the cases that inspiration doesn't find you and you can't quite design the presentation you were hoping, PowerPoint slide design services are available. For those that would like to charge on anyway, here are three tips to help you develop powerful PowerPoint presentations.

Do Some Pre-Planning

The best way to build a successful PowerPoint presentation is to do some pre-planning. When you start from a point of organization, you can visualize what each slide should look like when the presentation is complete. Instead of spending too much time arranging and re-arranging points, text and visuals, lay out each presentation component and, one by one, strategically place them within the slides.

Ensure the Presentation is Polished

When you are delivering a PowerPoint presentation, you must ensure that the end product is professionally polished. Each slide is a component of a total presentation, so each slide should be consistent with the next. Even though each slide is conveying a different set of points to your audience, margins, theme and overall branding must be consistent with the overall message. A polished slide presentation does not require you to be a graphics professional or a PowerPoint whiz. Instead of attempting to use fonts that are fancy, but not readable, for example, focus on the information and keep it simple.

The Visuals Count

Since your audience is going to focus their attention on the slides you are showing them while listening to you, remember, the visuals count. Two of PowerPoint's greatest assets are its user-friendliness and its preset templates and themes. When you're not a professional graphic designer or PowerPoint expert, it's perfectly acceptable to utilize an existing arrangement. As long as its consistent throughout the presentation and in-line with your branding, keeping it easy on your audience's eyes should be your priority. If you're feeling confident, there's a library of clip art at your disposal and you can't go wrong with inserting charts and infographics to break up blocks of text.

Thanks to PowerPoint's user-friendliness, building a meaningful presentation does not require professional experience, but for those presentations you can't quite perfect on your own, the professionals are at your service.

3 Tips for Continuing Your Education

Are you headed back to school to finish your degree? Or maybe you're just interested in a training course so you can kick-start a new career. Whatever your reasons for hitting the books again, here are just three ways to get the most out of adult education.

1. Find the Right Classes

First things first: Don't waste your money on classes that won't actually do anything for your career. Before you enroll in a new school, meet with an advisor to talk about your goals and plans. They can let you know which classes are necessary and which are just superfluous.

2. Consider Online Courses

If you have a job that keeps you busy or a family that demands the lion's share of your time, you might want to consider online courses instead of a classroom-based education. They'll allow you to attend school at your own convenience. Click here to learn more about digital learning opportunities.

3. Join Extracurriculars

It's a common misconception that extracurriculars are only for the young. They offer experience to everyone who signs up, and they can also be great breeding grounds for future investors and business partners. Don't be afraid to find a new hobby while you attend school.

These are just a few things to keep in mind as you further your education as a non-traditional student. Obtaining a degree or professional certificate can really open doors for you, so be proud of yourself. Your future is expanding by the minute.

A Different Kind of Summer

Summer is here once again! I know Macky is so excited about summer because aside from the usual summer activities he does with his friends; his father is also planning a vacation for him in Cagayan de Oro. As much as I want to, I also wish Macky would enjoy his vacation doing his usual activities but I believe this summer is a little bit different from the past.

Macky needs to take a few summer classes this time. I have to admit that his public school stay was not as fruitful as expected so for him to be able to proceed to the next level this coming school year, it is a must for him to take summer lessons on several subjects.

For this summer, I have enrolled him in a private school and negotiated a few conditions with the school principal where I intend to enroll him this coming school year. And because of his performance in the public school, I am now decided to transfer him back into a private institution. The tuition fees may hurt his father’s pocket but I think that is the better option for Macky right now.

This may be a different kind of summer for Macky but I do hope he will appreciate it and hopefully do better with his lessons this time.

Masters Degree in Social Work

There are some compelling and inspiring courses that are part of the standard curriculae for graduate programs in the field of social work. While most candidates for these master's degree programs hold undergraduate degrees in various programs, there are some core credits that joins the eclectic group of students seeking a masters degree in social work while giving students a generalist perspective for social work practice.

For those students that may go on to pursue roles as therapists or psychiatric clinicians, there are required classes such as Abnormal Psychiatry and Trauma Recovery Training. Counseling practice and Intervention Strategies may be most alluring to those degree students who are planning on providing support and therapy to clients. The breadth of healthcare insight and political science garnered in Public Policy gives students a chance to advocate, as well as become driven by the current social issues of their community.

Research and report coursework provides a foundation in administrative duties that will be useful across the life span, in many different capacities. The communication skills and attentive listening replicated from Speech and public speaking offerings will be another pragmatic insight that should stay with students long after graduation. Perhaps some of the more unconventional classes are found in the electives chosen by those involved in master programs at various sites; from fine arts to criminal justice, students can assert a bit of their personal preferences and style through the electives chosen to round out their schedules.

Foreign language may be required in some master programs, but if not, students are encouraged to consider the utility later on. Having even minimal second-language skills in the field of social work can be a huge asset, which not only opens up additional job opportunities but also increases rate of pay. If applicable, choose foreign language or American Sign Language as electives. This could expand qualifications for competitive and lucrative positions.

The classes take a progressive approach to practice, teaching skill sets for macro-based social work settings during first year of full time study, and micro-practice during the second or final full time year. Typically, it would take a full time student two full years with a complete course-load and barring any extensions or issues with experiential training through field studies and internships. Therefore, the courses may only give a hint at what could be unearthed through more in-depth study of particular fields of this expansive field of work.

Enrolled in a Public High School

Macky is currently enrolled in a public high school as a Grade 7 student since this is the first year of the implementation of the K to 12 Program in the Philippines. His father and the rest of us in the family have actually decided to enroll Macky in his old school even after considering how huge the enrolment fee is, but our big boy said that he want to transfer to a public high school where his neighbor friend is studying.

We didn’t like the idea at first although we understand that maybe he wanted a new and bigger environment. Even if I am not sold to the idea that he will be studying in a public school, I still inquired and was told that the enrolment will be after the Brigada Eskwela which is by the end of May. I talked to Macky about it but didn’t give him hope that he will be enrolled there because at first glance, I find the school’s location very intimidating since it was situated inside a crowded community.

Please don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against public schools for I am a product of a public school from primary to high school but Macky’s case is different. We are giving prior consideration on his attitude and study habits because his former teachers told me that he needs proper guidance not only in his studies but more importantly on his attitude. We were thinking that it will not do him any good to be studying in a public school considering the enormous number of students in every classroom.

I searched and inquired in some other private schools but Macky was very consistent with his plea to be enrolled in a public school. He said that the school has a good training program for basketball players aside from the fact that we won’t be spending much on tuition fees. His father left the decision to us who are here since he said that we can easily assess Macky’s situation.

The first week of June came and classes have already started in public schools but I was still undecided where to enroll Macky although I am considering two options – to enroll in a public school of his choice or return to his old school. Despite the apprehension, I finally decided to enroll my dear nephew in Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School (DRANHS) last week. It was actually my brother-in-law who has opened my awareness about Macky’s current situation. He said that he can totally relate to him because he was once enrolled in a private and public high school.

He shared that when he was studying in a private school, he has this feeling that he doesn’t belong and he doesn’t “fit in” considering that most of his classmates are well-off. He has developed this since of insecurity which I have also observed in my nephew especially during school activities wherein we need to pay something. He is always concerned about the payment and how expensive it is to be in their school plus the fact that he considered himself “poor” compared to his friends. Understanding what my brother-in-law was talking, I decided to enroll Macky in DRANHS that very same day.

When I went to the school, I was amazed because I didn’t pay anything for the enrolment. I was entertained by Sir Ian in the guidance counselor’s office and after filling out the needed information, I was told that Macky is already enrolled. Amazing! I was then referred to his class adviser to submit the needed documents. After everything was settled, I called Macky to let him know that he is already enrolled in the school of his choice. He was very happy as he jumped out of his bed when I asked him to see me in the nearest mall for us to shop for this school needs.

Our Kuya Macky is officially enrolled in a public high school and I am so thankful that his father and my parents supported my decision. I have realized that if we wanted Macky to be independent at an early age and be ready for the world, being in a public high school would help him a lot in becoming one. He seems very sheltered and protected in the private school which sometimes has a disadvantage as he can’t explore and discover his true potential since everything was provided. I just hope that he will be true to his promise that he will be home on time and will do well in his studies plus be very watchful of his manners.

I am looking forward that with his new school, new environment and new experiences, our Kuya will learn something that will equip him for the future.

Kuya Macky's Elementary Graduation

It is a dream come true for every student to graduate and earn a college degree but before that they need to pass through several levels like elementary and high school before finally reaching their dream of finishing their education. Every time a child graduates, the happiest among all is the parents. For the parents and students, the graduation ceremony is always momentous no matter how simple it is. Most people considered it as a milestone and an achievement worth remembering.

Last March 26, 2013, our Kuya Macky finally graduated from Elementary. It was actually a happy and sad moment for him. He is happy because he finally graduated from elementary and sad because he did not graduate with honor although he was given a Most Dependable Award during the graduation rites. And another deep reason of his sadness is the absence of both his parents. His father (my brother) can’t obviously make it because his working contract abroad was extended for another two years while his mother was in Gensan. It was only me, my mother and Bella who got the opportunity to witnessed Macky's graduation because Daddy is still on his way home from Cagayan de Oro.

Macky's father would like to have one big celebration for him but since there were only the four of us, we decided not to have a party at home. The graduation was held inside the mall so right after the graduation ceremonies, we dine at KFC then went home after that. Macky asked permission to stay in the mall with his classmates to play at timezone and plan for their farewell party the next day.

Macky's father congratulated him via skype and facebook that night. My brother was really sad to have missed his son's elementary graduation but he could not do anything about the situation. He knows how hard it is for Macky not to be with his parents on this special day but his consolation is we are all here to support him in all his endeavors. Kuya Macky’s elementary graduation is an event we have been waiting for the last seven years. Hehe

With Carlo, one of his best buddies :)

Congratulations on your elementary graduation Kuya Macky. Please know that with or without medals, we are still so proud of you!

The Sweet Smell of Graduation

After spending seven years in elementary, Kuya Macky is now excited for his graduation next week. He spent the first two years of his elementary education in SPED General Santos and almost five years in his current school, the International Christian School of Davao. Macky is supposed to graduate last year but since he transferred from Antipas and decided to stop going to school after they came back here in Davao, he was required to repeat the 5th grade.

He is so full of life and enthusiasm as he looks forward to graduation and for his first year in high school. All of us in the family are also happy for Macky’s upcoming graduation. He may not have the highest honors in class but we are still grateful to see him graduating this year. This is one big milestone in Macky’s life and this one is indeed worth celebrating.

Macky's father will not be around during the graduation because his work contract abroad was extended for another two years. He may be physically absent but his support and love for Macky is very visible. He is such a proud father and despite the distance, he can still whiff the sweet smell of graduation and the new hope it brings to Macky.

Congratulations for the upcoming graduation Kuya Macky. We are so proud of you. Cheers!

How does the new 529 Savings Plan will Benefit Parents with College-Bound Children?

Many parents would agree that next to retirement, saving for their children’s education is the biggest financial obligation they have. However, a lot of them do not know how to save money for college education, how much will it cost them and other expenses they might need to provide. The good thing for hard working students and parents today is that there are several alternative ways to save money for future college fees, especially in the past couple of years when college cost has been increasing. An example of a savings plan parents could use and afford to invest in is the 529 college plan. It is a savings plan that features very simple ways to save money coupled with a good number of benefits. A few examples of these benefits include:

● Only parents have the access and control to the savings account.
● Parents do not need to pay for the federal taxes at the time when the account starts to receive some earnings. Thus, there is a good possibility that there might be some state tax benefits, too.
● Parents can decide to roll the savings plan to another member of the family if the beneficiary does not want to pursue college education.
● Anyone in the family can contribute to the account.
● A lot of states do not require any age limit for when the money earned will be used.
● No income level requirements or limitations that might make individuals ineligible for the 529 account.

With college costs getting more and more expensive as years go by, it became tough to predict upcoming college cost after a decade. And all people could do is to anticipate for the worst, but hope for the best about college savings plan or student loan programs. On a positive note, increasing college cost will definitely compel students to study harder and to double their efforts in order to be eligible for scholarships, grants and other alternative sources for getting free college tuition fees. Indeed, this national problem requires an effort and cooperation from everyone in the country. There are ways to be able to afford college education, but only a small number of students who are fortunate enough to have access to it. It is this reason that the government encourages people to be more aggressive yet positive in looking for other ways to fund higher education expenses like through savings plan, enroll in an institution that parents could afford, student loan applications, spend a few hours for working part-time, or pursue a scholarship.

According to the Department of Education, the undergraduate tuition fees, room and lodging at a state university/college in 2010-2011 was $13,600. Parents might as well expect this cost would double in a private institution that may amount to $36,300 (non-profit) and $23,500 (for-profit institutions). On the contrary, with the help of 529 plans, parents can earn interest on their investment and it is a government-backed program. Meaning, the state government has already provided the plan holders with an asset management firm with whom parents can deal with regarding their concerns about their investment.

Why are Christmas School Productions so Important?

Five years ago a survey found that the traditional school nativity play - a staple for generations of British children - is under threat. It was discovered that just one in five schools intended on putting on a traditional nativity play due to fears about segregating faith groups in today's multi-cultural society.

Over a third of schools said that they were going to opt for a non-religious play, such as 'Scrooge' or 'Snow White', or not even put on a show at all. Certainly those opting for the latter option aren't just letting children miss a great opportunity, with all the dressing up and bonding that accompanies a nativity, but they're letting down parents and teachers as well.

Indeed, Christmas school productions are still important to people for many reasons - no matter what basis in faith they may, or may or not have.

Children

For children, a nativity or other Christmas play is simply something different from the norm. It's a break from the mundane class life that they might be used to - even if that is colouring in throughout the primary school week.

School productions also equip children with new skills that they'll later come to rely on in life. Speaking publicly, for example and memorising lines for a play can help their confidence/memory skills.

It could also be true to say that children will learn to get along with each other in a group activity, such as a play. They'll need to learn to work with each other and bounce off one another when delivering their lines.

However, perhaps most importantly, the school production provides a great time for them to engage with themes and subject matters that might ordinarily pass them by. No matter what the tale, many plays carry messages which provide strong moral guidance for people growing up. They also encourage children to question some of life's bigger questions.

"School nativity plays are a cultural treasure. Christmas encourages all people to appreciate our rich human culture and to ponder the profound and sacred," says Rupert Kaye, of the Association of Christian Teachers, puts it.

Parents

The Christmas play doesn't just have a positive impact on children but parents as well. Even if it isn't quite the Oscars, the overwhelming sense of pride a parent can get from seeing their child take the centre stage is enormous. Perhaps this is because for most of the school year, they don't actually see much of their child's successes in person. They have to wait for report cards and parent-teacher meetings - or the odd result or two from fleeting homework assignments.

How great a privilege it must be then to see a child performing in front of all their peers and teachers, doing a great job. Even if their performance wasn't as strong as hoped, then it still provides a great source of humour later in their lives.

Teachers

Teachers can also take pride in their pupils' achievements because they're also on show at the production. They're the ones who have to say "I put this together. I made this happen". What a joy it must be to finally see all the hard work come together. Perhaps they might even twig onto something of a rising star if one child stands out from the rest.

It's for all these reasons that school productions certainly have relevance and importance today - no matter what the basis of the play.

Standardized Educational System

Providing a free public education for elementary and secondary school students has been required in all American states. The National Center for Education Statistics states that the year 2010 – 2011 has the highest number of public school students reaching 49.5 million and this is expected to increase to 53 million by academic year 2021 – 2022 with an average of 7 percent annual growth.

The educational system is confronted with the challenge on how standardized the quality of teaching and education provided in every school. This actually has been a problem not just in developed countries but most particularly in third world countries as well. The role of educational resources is very important in ensuring that the implemented educational system is effective.

Conducting a standardized examination can gauge the students’ level of learning, comprehension and ability to make use of the things they learn in school. The test is not necessarily conducted by a government office since there are a lot of accredited private organizations that can facilitate it and also provide academic readiness resources to both parents and students.

A standardized educational system has long been a concern in every country since it faces a never ending challenge to enhance the existing one and strive to make things better and beneficial to all concerned.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Meeting

As a part of being concerned with Macky's well being, I always attend to every school activity that is required of me as a guardian. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Meeting is actually part of a regular activity in Macky's school. Attending activities such as this one is one way of knowing Macky's performance in school, that is why I always take the chance to be present whenever I can.

He is already in 6th grade so I was required to attend the meeting for graduating students after the general PTA meeting. The teacher - facilitator discussed about the graduation fees and the possible yearbook solicitation and expenses. It is better to discuss it earlier for the parents to know and prepare for it since the required payment is P5,000.

I got Macky's card after the PTA Meeting but I was requested by his teacher to stay. Sir Jade talked about Macky's academic performance in the class. He didn't belong to the top ten this grading period but was included in the list of students who do not have grades below 80. Although academically Macky is doing quite well, there is concern on his attitude in school.

Sir Jade have  discussed to me about Macky's attitude wherein he was caught answering back to his teachers in a very discourteous manner. I am not surprise by it because Macky has the tendency to be like that sometimes. His teacher and I agreed to do several things to help Macky change this kind of attitude.

I talked to Macky calmly  about what I have learned that day. He admitted about what he did and explained his side but I told him that whatever the reason maybe, he should not answer his teacher that way. He asked for apology and promised to ask forgiveness from his teachers the next day. Macky's father was so furious after knowing about it but I told him that scolding Macky will not do any good, that is why he talked to Macky with composure.

We find the situation like this very challenging and I wish that Macky's parents were here to guide him. His teacher has told me about how Macky misses his mother and father and I think this somehow have a great effect on Macky's attitude and performance in school.

I blog about this with Macky's permission. He want to take the situation as a challenge and he want me to document it here in this blog for him to be reminded of his commitment to change for the better. I am so looking forward for that day Kuya Macky. You know that we love you and we will always be here to listen.

How to Succeed in School

Are you struggling to pass your high school or college courses? Is it hard for you to focus and sit still through an entire class? Do you find yourself dozing off instead of taking notes? Many keys to academic success lie outside of the classroom instead of just inside.

One of the easiest ways to increase academic success without even stepping foot in a classroom is to get a good amount of sleep. It’s not enough to get 8 hours of rest every once in a while and make up for lost time on the weekend; sleep is not cumulative. Just like attending class, doing your homework, and studying, the amount you sleep should be consistent every night.

Other important aspects that you can control and can affect your academic performance are your diet and amount of exercise. It is especially important to eat breakfast or a snack before class because it’s difficult to absorb information or perform well on examinations when you’re hungry. In addition to sleep, diet, and exercise, asking for help when you need it is a crucial skill for success.

Ask for Help When You Need it:

A well-rounded education incorporates knowledge on a variety of subjects, and we can’t all be good at everything. It’s important to be able to identify your weaknesses and ask for help when you need it; if you’re not sure what you need help with, look at your grades for obvious indicators. There are many resources that provide academic assistance. You can hire a tutor to help with your math homework, use a superior proofreading service for help writing an essay, or you can even go to your teacher directly with a list of questions or topics you’re struggling with.

The important thing to remember is that you’re not “weak” for asking for help and you’re not alone. Before you ask for help, you actually have to try to do the work- getting help is not having someone else do the work for you.

Paige One writes about a variety of topics, from fashion to fitness, to even education!

Back From School Camping

The annual school camping is a part of every student's life starting fourth grade. Macky just came back from a 3-day camping this afternoon and he looks really different, I mean his skin is a little darker and he has a pimple on his face. Our little boy will soon me a young man before we even realized it. :(

I believe that allowing kids to attend school activities such as school camping  will help them learn many things as this is one way of letting them taste a little independence and do things with their friends. Exposing them to this kind of events encourages them to explore and learn things on their own without somebody watching them with caution.

Off to attend the camping...

This is already Macky's second time to attend school camping, the first one was a bigger event held outside their school last year. I can still remember how Mama almost spank him when he came back from the camp because of the stuff he lost. My mom vowed to never let Macky attend school camping once again but I told her that it is part or maybe the consequence of learning. You learn something while losing some of your things. :)

5th Grade Final Report Card

During the school registration last June, I was given the chance to bring home Macky's 5th grade final report card. The card are not supposed to be brought home but I insisted to borrow it for  Macky's  father to have a glimpse of his class performance for the year.

As you can remember,  Macky received a medal  during the school's recognition day last March 2012. I took some photos on Macky's 5th grade final report card to keep track his progress for the next year and also as a souvenir for Macky and his father.

A Big Boy Wannabe

I went to Macky's school this afternoon to pay for his books. I purposely went their late afternoon thinking that we will come home together since  his class is almost over by that time. While waiting to be entertained by the school cashier, I saw him joining the basketball game played by high school students but when the official game started he was just seated near the stage.

I called him to ask why didn't he join his classmates who are playing just beside the court, I was so surprised when he answered "I don't want to join them because what they're  playing is only for kids."  I realized that he don't want to be identified as a kid anymore although he is only 12 years old. He preferred the company of big men in the school because he wanted to be one of them. He didn't even came home with me but insisted that I should go first because he is still playing basketball and he already knew his way home.

It is just so ironic because while most of us at home are trying to treat Macky as a kid, he on the other hand, is striving to be a big boy.  He now insists on doing things on his own and he demands more independent. Kuya Macky really wants to grow fast and indeed he is. The thought saddens me because I always see him as a baby but  I think I need to accept the fact that our eldest baby  in the family is not a baby anymore but a big boy in his own world.

Final Exams

Today is the last day of Macky's examination at school. He sent me a message this afternoon that he got a perfect score in Filipino and that he assures me that he will finish this school year with honor. Although, it is still early to celebrate we can't help but be happy about it.

Since it is the last day of their final exams, his classmates have organized a DOTA Tournament which will be held right after their exams. Macky was invited to join and he asked permission from all of us night before. We allowed him to join as a way of unwinding since the school year is almost over.

Even though his group have lost the tournament,  he still went home  happy about the result of his exams. Hopefully, he will be included in the list of honor students this school year because if not, he will no longer be allowed by his Tito Bren  to join the basketball varsity for him to focus on his academics.

At School for the PTA Meeting

At Macky's classroom while waiting for the report card...

As an appointed (actually assumed) guardian of Macky, I am the one who  attends to all the monthly PTA meetings in his school. Right after the meeting, the report cards are usually given and it is also the chance for the parents and teachers to talk about the child's performance at school.

While in school, I always  took the chance to bond with Macky to get to know him better as a student through the eyes of his teachers and his friends. I am just so happy that when it comes to his academics he is really doing well. Way to go, Macky!

Higher Exam Results

Macky's 2nd Mastery Examination at school has just concluded. I was so happy about his final grades on the first grading period because most of them are  higher compared before and he was even included in the honor  list as Top 6.

I was a bit doubtful if he will make good in his mastery exams because I didn't see him study nor  review his lessons. There were actually times that I scheduled to review him  but he just set the time and agreed to it but it didn't materialize because either he was already sleeping or my hands are full with Bella.

Nevertheless, he still got higher results on his exams and even got a perfect score in Science.

Macky's test paper results with my signature on it... ( proud tita!)

Our little man is very motivated to study and really works harder; you might want to ask why? Because he is so eager to have his MP5; the bet we have if he reaches the third rank. lol... Keep up the good work Macky. We are so proud of you!

I went to Macky's school last Friday to attend the PTA Meeting and also to get his card. I was so happy to know that Macky belongs to the Top 10 of his class.

Macky's  highest grade for the first grading period is 90 while his lowest is 86. I just noticed that he needs improvement in Character Building especially in the areas of  Courtesy,  Cleanliness and Orderliness but he got A's on Honesty, Industry and Self - Reliance.

Truly our  Macky Boy has worked  really hard. He was asking for an MP5 player and I am planning to give it to him as a reward if he reaches the TOP 3 spot on the next grading period. Keep it up Macky! Your papa and mama will be very happy and proud of what you have achieved. Way to go!
