Teaching Teenagers to Love Music

Teenage years are the most crucial years in shaping your children’s ambitions, dreams and goals in life. The external environment can greatly affect their behavior and could determine what kind of role they are going to play as they reach the young adult stage. That is why it is very important to immerse them into different areas of self- development for them to fully explore all the aspects of their personality.

One excellent field which they can try is the world of music. Enroll them in music classes where they can play music and be trained how to appreciate it. According to studies, there is a good impact to the mental and emotional well- being of children if they listen to music.

Playing guitar is one of the most common examples. The new mel bay offers a wide selection of guitars to choose from. Help your children develop a love of music and help them shape their future.

Teen’s Curiosity

Oh, how time flies! Macky have grown so fast and a month from now he will be turning fifteen. He is already in Grade 8 and in no time he will be graduating from high school. We are all very excited for him. As a teenager, he is very curious about many things from the physical changes in his body to developing relationship with the opposite sex. In fact at his age, he has already counting girlfriends and two of whom he has introduced to us.

Whenever he sees something new or things that he did not understand, he would always ask questions. He is into new hobbies nowadays. His interests include sports, music, computers games and hanging out with friends. As an Aunt, I wish he would concentrate more on developing his skills in music. I am actually encouraging him to practice playing guitar and other musical instruments. I hope that one day when resources permit, I can buy him a nice guitar online. I have seen a website that has very wide selections of musical instruments and when I click the word send for our free catalog, I was amazed by the wonderful assortments they have in their store.

Singing to the Beat of…

It always makes me smile catching my nephew Macky singing to the beat of his favorite songs. One of his favorite songs is a reggae entitled Safe and Sound by Rebelution. It looks like he can’t help but sing and dance in a swirlygig routine whenever he is playing it on his phone. He may not be the best dancer but he can definitely compensate it with his voice. Yes, Macky can sing really well.

I was curious about the song when I heard it from him so I searched it on YouTube. When I listened and watched it, I don’t know but it makes me want to dance and sing to the beat of its music too. Funny! Now, I can relate to why Macky is always in a cheerful mood anytime he hears his favorite song.

He Can Really Sing

Macky grew up surrounded by videoke machines because it was part of his parents’ business back in his mother’s hometown in General Santos City. At a tender age of 3, he can already finish singing few Filipino songs played in the videoke machine. I remember one his favorite songs were “Totoy Bibo” by Vhong Navarro. He would sing his heart out to any tune and would resort to humming the melody if he ran out of lyrics. He would do it holding to the microphone real tight as if someone would grab it from him anytime.

I know with a little determination and the right guidance, he would certainly develop his voice. I do believe that he can really sing and that he can do it well only if he wants too. I hope with much encouragement, he would eventually heed our advice – have a voice lesson or join a music class. I’m excited to see him holding an at4040 microphone as if he is a recording superstar. How I wish Macky can read this post and finally have a change of heart but whatever your decision is Kuya, we will always be here to support you. No pressure at all!

Investment and Music

Some kids even at a tender age are trained to love the beauty of music. Parents even go to the point where they need to invest heavily on musical instruments just to entice their sons and daughters to become experts someday in piano, violin, guitar and flute. It’s every parent’s wish to see their kids grow up and have their own recitals in front of a large crowd someday.

To make sure that they start right, a number of online stores that sell musical instruments encourage every parent to explore other items that help create a perfect music output for every rehearsal. Items such vestax turntables at Musicians Friend and amplifiers if chosen carefully help will produce nice resonance among orchestra instruments.

It’s very important to start everything right if you wish to invest your time and money by training your kid to become a musical virtuoso. Soon you’ll see a Wagner, Bach or even Debussy and it’s definitely something you’ll be very proud of as parents.

It’s a Man’s Thing

I guess I would never totally understand some things about men in general. Honestly, I am trying but there are just certain things that only they can comprehend and figure out. I have already accepted the fact that men and women are two different species and both are equally created by God to co-exist but I can’t help but wonder sometimes.

Just like for example men’s common love for cars, motorcycles and even for the basic household tools. Macky has just entered teenage years but he is so into this matter even when he was younger. I bet he got this fondness from his father. It’s a man’s thing I believe so it is like an instant connection between Macky and the stuffs. He may don’t have personal collection of the things he like right now but I am sure he has been searching the website for these and dreamed that he could have what he wants someday.

I know someday, somehow Macky will acquired what he truly desires and I pray that when that day comes, he is ready for it and will be able to take good care the belongings God has given him.

An Online Music Bonding

If there is one thing that Macky and his dad haven’t done yet, I would say it is about playing musical instruments together. We grow up in a family where music is not a common thing because our parents are both busy with the business. I guess that is one of the factors why we don’t know how to play any musical instruments. Lucky for my sister who has friends that greatly influenced her to discover her love for music at least now she knows how to play guitar and other string instruments.

Just recently, Macky has expressed his interest to learn how to play guitar and any other musical instruments. I assume he wants to do something productive on his spare time and not spend it on playing computer games. Learning any instruments is generally hard especially if you did not grow with it or even acquainted with any of those. So aside from recommending him to attend a guitar lesson this coming summer, he may start with the great doumbeks at musicians friend. It may seem different from a guitar but it is a good way to start and fuel up his interest for music while waiting for his guitar lessons this summer.

While Macky is learning musical instruments I wish that his dad is also working on something to ease his boredom. I am sure a guitar or drums tutorial will do and will definitely help a lot in relieving homesickness. Afterall, an online music bonding sounds like a great idea.

What to Choose: Active or Passive Powered Monitors?

Studio monitors come in myriad of specifications. If your activities often involved studio recording or if you are in the business of managing a music studio, you would probably understand that there are number of considerations to take note in buying small powered monitors. Its mounting cabinet, acoustic treatment, driver type, EQ and Room Corrections are all equally important features. Choosing between an active and a passive powered monitor is also important for the best performance of your studio.

However, you need to know that not one of them is generally superior to the other but choosing the most appropriate one for your music studio will definitely improve the performance of your monitor system. Active monitors always offer you the convenience when it comes to choosing and installation of appropriate amplifier to drive your monitor. Active monitor has built in amplifier that matches with your speakers for a best sonic output. Nevertheless if your music studio is already built with an excellent power amplifier that warrants you the most accurate sonic performance, then passive monitor is perfect for you.

In the end, your choice should practically depend on what your music studio has in present.

Into Music

As he is entering into the teenage years, Macky is becoming very particular with a lot of things, especially on his hygiene, his looks, and his hobbies and interests. Aside from his obvious love for basketball, he is also into music. He would listen and get easily interested in latest rap, reggae, pop, disco and visayan music popularized by local artists.

He likes downloading songs and music from Youtube and converts it into MP3 for him to play it on his mobile phone. He has also asked for a huge headset for him to look like an american dj while dancing and listening to his favorite tune.

I hope and pray that his interest in music will inspire him to explore more and be the best in this field should he decide to make a career out of it someday.

Guitar Lessons

I remember Macky telling his father about his intention to enroll in guitar lessons last summer. But summer now it’s officially over but Macky haven’t started any guitar lesson yet due to his very busy summer activities. To motivate him to self-study, Tito Bren gave his old guitar to Macky and told him to just watch guitar lessons on YouTube and search for other references online.

To begin with, he advises Macky to identify the minor and major chords and also be acquainted himself with the guitar and its accessories like Zvex Pedals and all the equipment that can enhance his performance while playing guitar. Since guitar lessons is new to Macky, I know he will be having a hard time with it but I believe that because of his diligence and determination, he will learn and will eventually become a talented guitar player.

Motorcycle Maintenance

When Macky’s father was about to leave for his work abroad, one of the many things his father taught him was cleaning and maintaining his motorcycle. He was given quick lessons on how to drive the motorcycle first then basic maintenance follows. Although my dad was around all the time, my brother wanted Macky to be responsible at an early age.

So every time the motorcycle needs maintenance and cleaning, it was Macky and Daddy who took care of it. It was like a bonding time for them discussing what needs to be done with their toy. Oftentimes, they would test drive the motorcycle together early in the morning then do the needed upkeeps right after that.

It was just a little unusual because it was actually Macky who taught Daddy how to drive a motorcycle instead of Daddy teaching him. They would conduct inventory on some of the tools needed for motorcycle maintenance and I even overheard Macky asking Daddy about some ball knobs while doing the inventory.

9 Hobbies For Busy Moms

Take a look at your friends and family. They probably all have different hobbies that they are bragging about. You might be so busy with work and the kids that you probably don't have any time to take up anything new. You just don't have time for storm chasing or mountain climbing like your friends. Luckily, there are some hobbies that you can do right from the comfort of your own home. This way, you can still be at the school in time to pick up the kids. You can still have time to make dinner for your family at night. But at least you will have a little joy for yourself during the day. Let's face it, everybody needs a hobby to make their life a little happier! Here are 9 hobbies you can do right at home:

1. Crafting. Pinterest! You are already pinning things left and right so why not actually do one of the things you pin?

2. Gardening. This is good for the soul. You can even start growing your own vegetables to save money on groceries and eat healthier.

3. Painting: it's not just for kids. You don't have to be the next Picasso, but painting can be really fun! If paint scares you, then use your child's crayons to make your own creations.

4. Dancing. There are a lot of really cool DVDs that can teach you how to dance or you can simply put on some music and prance around your home!

5. Writing. Keeping a journal is a stress reliever. If you don't like the idea of having a journal, then write your own stories. Experiment and see if you are good at making up a childrens' story for your kids and read it to them before bed.

6. Cooking. If you don't know how to already, you should definitely learn. It will always be a useful tool on your personal resume and who knows? You might actually be really good and start whipping up meals left and right for all the bake sales and fundraisers.

7. Playing. Go play with your kids when they get home from school. Running around the backyard is good for your health and fun to do with your little ones.

8. Yoga. On the opposite end of playing, yoga can be equally good for your mind, body, and soul. Take a few minutes every day to relax. You'll be glad you did.

9. Photography. If you don't have a camera, there are tons of great apps to use to make your photos look really awesome!

Playing Online Games on Weekends

I have been actively blogging since the year 2010 so I am practically facing the computer most of the time but I was never interested to even try any famous online games. Most of my friends are going crazy over Candy Crush asking and giving lives here and there. Reading their Facebook walls flooded with their status about Candy Crush made me smile for I am happy that they are enjoying, but I can never really see myself playing it. Call me killjoy or corny, but I could not imagine spending so much time playing online games. No offense meant to those who love online games but I actually think it is a waste of time for me. I would rather update my blogs or visit other blogs than play.

Here comes my nephew Macky who is my total opposite. I know that if he would have to choose between studying and playing online games particularly DOTA, he would definitely choose the latter. We have actually set a playing schedule for Macky and that's every weekend but he asked to at least have an hour with DOTA after class every Friday before going home. Every Saturday if he doesn’t have a review at school or basketball practice, expect Kuya Macky to be in his favorite internet cafe with his friends playing DOTA. His day would usually starts at around 10AM and just right after eating breakfast and preparing himself, he is on his way to play.

Although my mom and I have allowed Macky to play online games during weekends, I am just not sure if his father have knowledge about this. This kind of activity is somehow expensive but we have tolerated it for Macky to have a bonding time with his friends and also for him not to get bored at home. Playing online games on weekends gives him a little freedom so we are supportive about it for we know he is happy about it. I just hope he appreciates it and values the trust we have given him.

Addicted To Reggae

One reason why Macky wanted to have a phone is for him to listen to music every time he wants to. He loves to  listen to any kind of music genre from Bisayan, Filipino, English, Pop, Rock, Christian Songs, etc. What is amazing about him is he can memorize almost all of the lyrics of  music he listens to. I am usually  the one downloading his favorite songs from  the net via his insistent request. Lol!

Few weeks ago, he asked me to look for the song Safe and Sound by the Rebelution band in YouTube. It was a reggae and the name of the group is kind of new to me but when I heard the song, I immediately liked it and keep on playing it every now and then. Macky was so happy hearing his favorite song played on the laptop. We are both addicted to this song. Hehehe

Sharing to you the song Safe and Sound with lyrics....Enjoy!

Macky's Little Secret

I went to Macky's school yesterday afternoon to pay for his basketball uniform. I purposely went there late that afternoon thinking that we could go  home  together after  paying. I was a little late but hoping that he is still at their classroom  but when I inquired, I was told that he was at the nearby internet  shop.

Macky's classmates (Matthew and four other girls)  helped me look for him in the internet shop but we did not find him there. Matthew told me that Macky is playing online games after class almost everyday. Hmm...so that was Macky's little secret! We were wondering why was he very insistent on not wanting to be fetch from school. And I think now I know the reason why.

My father used to fetch him at school until last month wherein he declared that he wanted to go to school and go home from school all by himself. He said that he is already of age (11 years old, still a minor!) and knows how to take care of himself especially when crossing the road. We were hesitant at first but we understand that he wants a little independence so we agreed.

But after hearing what Matthew said, I am trying to reconsider things. I told my mother about it and she decided to cut off  Macky's daily allowance from P50 to P30. Macky denied about it saying that he is only playing during weekends wherein he was permitted to do so. By the way, Macky's internet schedule is every weekends only.
