Should I go to the Emergency Room or Urgent Care?

There are several things to consider when you’re not feeling well, and deciding where to go is one of the most important decisions you will make. For most people, that will be a choice between the urgent care and an ER, such as the 24 hour emergency clinic Cypress. As I am sure you’re aware, the emergency room was intended for actual emergencies that couldn’t wait until you could get an appointment with your doctor. However, more and more people were heading to the ER for non-emergency situations, causing the ER to become over saturated with non-emergency related problems.

The solution to this was the urgent care. Despite being widely available, some people still visit the emergency room instead of an urgent care even when they aren’t experiencing serious health complications. Knowing the differences between the two and which one is better in certain circumstances will help you make a more informed choice and all around better decision for your specific situation.

Emergency Room
Emergency rooms are equipped to handle a wide array of situations, such as surgical procedures, x-rays, trauma and potential life threatening problems. Emergency rooms are typically found within hospitals and are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The following is a list of common situations that would require a visit to the ER:

• Animal bites, bug bits or other allergic reactions, such as food
• Arm or leg pain or weakness
• Broken bones
• Bleeding continuously
• Chest pain
• Deep wounds
• Head injuries
• Shortness of breath
• Unconsciousness
• Vomiting continuously

Urgent Care
Urgent care is best for non-emergency care but you cannot see your primary care doctor. Most are equipped to treat non-life threatening situations. They are often opened later than traditional doctor’s offices, as well as on holidays and weekends. Urgent cares are generally less busy than emergency rooms but are still staffed with medical doctors and nurses. They also have access to labs and x-rays.

Below is a list of the few situations in which going to an urgent care would be more appropriate than going to the ER:

• Broken bones
• Cold and flu
• Coughs
• Diarrhea
• Fevers
• Minor burns or injuries
• Sore Throat
• Stomach pain
• Vomiting

Determining Fetal Health With Ultrasound Technology

Knowing the health of a developing fetus is important, especially if there is a history of genetic birth defects in your family tree. Ultrasound testing is a safe and proven way to know how a baby is developing through each trimester. It can provide peace of mind or help prepare in cases where there will be unexpected medical or developmental problems.

How Ultrasound Technology Works

Ultrasound technology is simply the use of sound waves sent out at a frequency that the ears cannot hear. These waves ping off the fetus and create an accurate picture on a monitor. The technology has been in use since 1986. Advancements and the creation of high resolution ultrasound provide the best images yet. this technology allows for the earlier detection and intervention of problems with birth defects and other fetal developmental problems.

Finding Genetic Deformities

Genetic abnormalities and deformities in a fetus are inherited from the genes of the mother or the father. It is best to seek out testing if there are any genetic problems that you know of in either side of the family. Down’s syndrome is a genetic abnormality where there are extra or missing chromosomes in the DNA. It is easy to spot due to the characteristic look of the eyes, nose and sometimes cleft pallet. Cerebral palsy is another genetically inherited problem that can be detected early when given an ultrasound.

Discovering Developmental Disabilities

Other disabilities and deformities can be naturally occurring or environmentally produced. Spina bifida, fetal alcohol syndrome, vision problems, and a variety of heart abnormalities are only a few. Early detection can offer ways to resolve the issues, or minimize the damage.

Pinpointing Specific Body and Organ Problems

Ultrasound technology can find areas of abnormal tissue and bone growth, fluid build-up, missing limbs, digits, holes in the heart, heart valve problems, under-developing organs and even cancerous tumors. There have been life-saving heart operations done on babies while in the womb, or taken out, operated on and placed back in the womb to await birth. There are some very technical and nearly miraculous things medicine can do for the unborn child. Diagnosis and treatment begins with something as simple as the ultrasound.

Healthy Pregnancy Progression Through Fetal Size

Much can be determined about the overall health and development of the fetus through size. It is remarkably easy for the technician to measure the size of the baby at each stage, which can then be compared to what is normal, below or above average. It gives a more accurate estimation of potential birth date.

He is Sick

It was Sunday after attending mass when Macky complained about his stomach. He said he has difficulty defecating so I asked him to go to my mom for medication. He was given minor massage using menthol liniment oil thinking that it was only caused by air and the sudden change of temperature. I have also let him drink tea for him to feel better. In our own dialect, we usually called his condition panuhot or kabag

But even after what we did, he said that he was still not feeling better and that he didn’t have a good sleep that night but he still went to school on Monday morning but went home in the afternoon due to the stomach ache. He is sick and he needed to rest early.

Mama has given him some herbal medicine in fact, I have even found some leaves on his stomach earlier this evening when he was about to go to bed. I am awake almost the whole night monitoring him because I started to get worry about his condition. I told him that if he feels that the pain is still there, we will see his doctor today. I'm just glad that he didn't have fever so at least we know that he didn't have any infection. I really do hope our Kuya Macky will get better from his sickness soon. It scares me every time someone in the family gets sick especially the kiddos.

Are you caring, patient and good with people? Are you a good listener and want to make a difference to people's lives? Then becoming a care worker could be the job for you.

Care workers provide assistance, support and care to people who have difficulties with their daily activities like providing health care services for the elderly . You could work with older people, families, children, people with learning or physical disabilities in a variety of environments including a clients' home, a residential home, a hospital or a day centre.

As a care worker you may do some of the following - help clients at home with tasks like showering and dressing, do housework such as cleaning and ironing, preparing/serving meals or cleaning medical equipment.

Giving Grandparents a New Lease of Life

Your grandparents were always there for you when you were a child, more than likely fussing over you at every available occasion. Maybe it’s time to return the favour? Giving your grandparents a new lease of life and allowing them to live out their retirement years in a leisurely and exciting manner is something we all want to be able to provide – but how can we?

Find out what they want

In order to cater to your grandparents’ needs it is important to establish what it is that they want from their senior years. They may wish to live by the seaside or embark on a round the world trip. Alternatively, they may simply want to stay in their local area but downsize their property to something more manageable.

Know your options

In order to ensure every need is fulfilled, it is important to research every available option when it comes to retirement. There are a number of retirement choices available, some of which include retirement properties. Such properties don’t have to mean a loss of independence and although care services are available, they are a fundamentally different experience to most care homes.

This safety net may come in the shape of a daily carer or alternatively a specialist that provides help with certain issues. Daily chores can sometimes become a little tedious and as such, having a personal aid will allow you to conquer such tasks quickly. Of course, residents don’t have to use these services if they don’t want to – the whole point of retirement homes is they provide people with support if they need it.

Keep active

Keeping grandparents physically and mentally active is also important. Many retirement venues feature a number of events and activities held onsite and these are a great way to give grandparents something fun to look forward to.

Retiring should mean a new lease of life and as such, a time to embrace all the things you have always wanted to try. This obviously applies to your grandparents and perhaps the easiest way to show your gratitude for all the things they’ve done for you is to help them find the best place to spend their later years.
